April 27, 2005 – Current
Palisades Charter High School
Career Day:
Part of our Community support is
centered on the local high school
student interests, in attending a
University for higher education in the
field of their endeavor.
At this yearly Career Day event, we are
allocated space in the middle of the
high school circulation area. During the
day we volunteer to share the process of
Architecture and General Contracting,
with students interested in pursuing
this as their career.
This is also a wonderful forum for
students to gain insight into various
University programs. Explaining the day
to day experience at a particular
University, surprisingly not hugely
different from years ago, provides them
with an 'eye opening' feel of what they
might experience.
Also, some students are quite interested
in the licensing requirements, for
instance to become an Architect. We
explain that it takes a minimum of (8)
years experience and then passing a (42)
hour State Board Exam (this is when
their facial expression changes a little
bit).
It’s also amazing how some students
sense overall concepts and benefits so
well. For instance, we were explaining
to a student what the Design-Build
concept is and received an interesting
reply: “It sounds like it’s kind of like
having everything you want right on your
phone”.
Barry Shaw & Associates, Inc. is
available to participate in other
similar venues as well; please contact
